Can a Bot Bake With Someone Else’s Wisdom?
Carmen has run her family bakery for thirty-one years. Last spring her nephew built “CarmenBot,” an AI trained on her recipes, her voice memos, and a decade of her texts. The plan was to copy thirty-one years of baking wisdom into an app the staff could ask while she visited her grandchildren.
Asked how long to proof the dough, CarmenBot said, “Until it looks sleepy.” Asked about a customer complaint, it replied, “Don't fuss, he'll be back Thursday.” Asked for the cinnamon roll recipe, it listed eleven ingredients and added, “The twelfth one you'll figure out.”
It sounded exactly like her. The rolls came out wrong for three weeks. The bot had her words and none of her wisdom.
Common belief says you share your wisdom once you retire, and technology can capture the rest. Carmen found the opposite. Her wisdom lived in the reasons behind each answer, and she could correct the bot because she was at the ovens every morning. That is wisdom in motion: explaining, adjusting, and deciding while you are active enough to do it.
Then a new baker asked CarmenBot about the empty chair by the front window, the one Carmen sets out every morning and lets no one sit in. She had told no one why.
The bot answered in her voice, with a reason pieced together from ten years of her texts. Carmen read it, set down her coffee, and drove to the bakery before sunrise.
